Right now, I am doing some remodeling on a new home, editing some video, keeping up this website and two others for clients, taking lots of photos (usually just "fun" stuff, see my photo site: dougherring.com) and performing as a Knight/Yeoman/Pirate with the Seattle Knights performance troupe. And at the moment, I am storyboarding an opening movie sequence and adding some new watercolors to my portfolio.
Things have been busy since I left the games industry, and what is coming up next? I have no idea.
I am not actively seeking work again in the games industry. I have an excellent skill set and a lot of experience in that industry, and in truth, a lot of passion. What would pull me back in would be a GREAT project, and those are few and far between. If I wanted to do "average" games, even if those making them don't think of them as such, I would be doing it. Not a big fan of the modern "realism" of today's 3D games either. I think games should visually be closer to traditional animation rather than live action film. I find reality boring and have no desire to re-create it in a game environment. I like larger than life. I have been lucky to date, to have worked on a wide variety of historical and fantastic and futuristic projects. Things go in cycles, and I am waiting for the Pixar of games to come along and take interactive entertainment to the next level. And there always is a next level, despite what some would have you believe here and now.
Storyboards on the other hand, have always been a love. I am a student of film and I spend far too much time taking everything I digest and converting it to visual terms. Beyond the visuals, I have also taken Robert McKee's three day story seminar on film writing (Brian Cox did a great take on him in "Adaptation") which is really just a hint at how diverse and eclectic my life and interests are. I would LOVE to do more storyboarding.
My schedule is such that taking a large block of time, including relatively short-term location changes, is very very doable for the right project. I am in fact looking forward to what might come and I am pretty darn flexible. Thanks!
Sincerely,
Doug-
